During 2008, QWWS will be turning our attention to the issue of paid maternity leave as part of the identified importance of gaining access to improved work/life balance and conditions for working women.

It is a well-established premise in research and workplace practice that family-friendly policies such as childcare, child-related leave and tax/benefit policies can help create a better outcomes for employees in the juggle between work and family-life. Paid leave benefits targeted at assisting employees to manage work and family responsibilities have been the subject of policy debate in developed countries for over a decade, but it remains that Australia is the only OECD country (except USA) without a paid maternity leave scheme.

QWWS believes that Paid Maternity Leave is necessary to ensure women have the financial means to stay at home following the birth of a child and not feel pressured to return to work before they are ready.

QWWS is currently running a petition to urge the Federal government to introduce a system of universal paid maternity leave. Please give your support to this petition an sign it here.
